Who is A Plastic Planet?

A Plastic Planet (APP) is a global movement for change with a singular goal - to ignite and inspire the world to turn off the plastic tap. We cannot save our oceans, our soil and the health of future generations without dramatic reduction in plastic production.

APP has a strong belief in the power of business to create change. Uniquely solutions-focused and collaborative; they work at senior levels within industry, retail, media, education, UN and Governments. The first APP campaign asked supermarkets to give consumers the choice to buy their groceries plastic free - in a Plastic Free Aisle. This campaign created significant global media coverage and was supported by UK PM Theresa May in her 25 Year Environmental Plan. Shortlisted for the Design Museum Beazley Awards, this people-empowering campaign has been a real catalyst for change, reaching millions of people across the world.

Mid 2018, APP launched the Plastic Free™ Trust Mark. In contrast to the confusing back of pack symbols that focus on recycling, the APP Trust Mark is a consumer-focused front of pack Mark telling the shopper one thing - this packaging is plastic free. 90 brands and businesses worldwide are undergoing the rigorous evaluation application process and will be proudly displaying the Trust Mark on the front of their packaging over the next few months.

November 2018 saw the launch of the next APP catalytic project – taking nearly 2000 skus plastic free in Thornton’s Budgens in a fast-tracked 10 weeks. This supermarket is now a live working lab, open to all competitors, showcasing new materials and solutions, constantly engaging with the public to double the plastic free offer over the next 6 months.

This year APP have partnered with The Dieline to create the world’s first Plastic Free Design Award within The Dieline’s prestigious global awards scheme.

APP also led a Plastic Free Hackathon with Unilever and One Young World. This is the first open source initiative from Unilever on helping them reduce the use of plastic. The winning team are now funded for a 6 month accelerator programme within Unilever, working on a solution to eradicate the 46 billion plastic sachets they produce annually, mostly for use in developing countries. This is an excellent example of APP’s pro-business approach – igniting and empowering from within to accelerate change.
